Boys & Girls Clubs Core Program Information

Mission: To inspire and enable all young people, especially those who need us most, to reach their full potential as productive, responsible and caring citizens.

Youth Development Strategy: To instill within youth a sense of Belonging, Usefulness, Influence and Competence.

Our Five Core Areas:
# • Character & Leadership Development
• Career & Education Development
• Health & Life Skills
• Sports, Fitness & Recreation
• The Arts

Chartered Boys & Girls Clubs are guided by two primary principles: (1) The Club is specifically for boys and girls, and (2) The Club is for all boys and girls. The first principle simply means that the Club will used by youth up to age 18 during operating hours. There will be some situations in which adults and youth are involved in joint programs, but those are special events. During off hours, adults or other entities can use the Club. The second principle - for all boys and girls - means that all youth can afford to become members and that it matters not where they live. Everyone can join.

Volunteers: Volunteers are nearly as important to the Club as the staff as they form meaningful relationships with the Club members and have a positive impact on their lives. All volunteers are carefully screened and must undergo a criminal background check (local and federal) prior to having access to the Club members.

Daily Programs Sheet

Power Hour Homework Program - This program is held Monday through Thursday from 2:30-4:00 p.m. When members arrive at the Club, they must complete their homework prior to participating in recreational activities. If they don’t have homework, they must read for a minimum of 30 minutes. Club members earn points for doing their assignments that they can redeem for prizes and field trips. A certified teacher from Alexandria Public Schools conducts the program

SOL Prep - Members of a national sorority meet with the Club members twice per week to prepare them for the upcoming SOL’s and to assist with reading and math. Tutoring is also available for members.

Art & Crafts Program - Projects include drawing, painting, Club decoration, field trips to art museums, and holiday and special occasion art.

Leadership Clubs - This program is designed to help Club members to become youth leaders. Parliamentary procedure is taught and community service is stressed. Club members are given positive alternatives to at-risk activities such as gang involvement and violent behavior. Leadership Club members are encouraged to take the PSAT and SAT exams early in their high school years in order to qualify academically for college.

Sports Leagues - All Club members, regardless of skill level, are given the opportunity to participate the Club’s sports leagues; leagues include flag football and basketball. An awards program concludes all leagues. In addition, the Club has fielded two AAU teams that participate in tournaments throughout the state.

SMART Moves - (Skills Mastery And Resistance Training) - This is an awareness program that deals with all ages and helps to arm Club members with the skills to resist drugs, alcohol, tobacco and premarital sex.

Dance Class - Club members are involved in modern, hip-hop, and jazz dance styles.

Youth of the Year/Month - An outstanding teenager is chosen to represent the Club as its most outstanding youth. Scholarships are given to the winner each year.

Field Trips - Field trips include college visits, museums, amusement parks, skating, and pro sports events. Members also went on a trip to Cuba in which all expenses were paid and they were allowed to play in an International Basketball Tournament.

Money Matters - This program helps to improve youth financial management skills. Sessions are designed to be engaging, hands on, and geared towards youth from ages 11-18. This program is a collaboration between the Club and the Charles Schwab Foundation.

Youth Employment Program - Members are provided the opportunity to compete for summer jobs and receive job preparation skills.

Triple Play Program - Sponsored by Coca-Cola and Kraft Foods, this program is a health and wellness program designed to empower young people to make informed decisions about their physical, mental, and social well being. It is designed to improve youth’s knowledge of healthy habits, good nutrition, and the importance of physical fitness.
